KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued an advisory on the beginning of the transitional monsoon phase, which is expected to start on March 14 until May.
In a statement released at noon today, the department said that the transitional phase will see regions in the country experiencing possible thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong winds within a short period of time.
“Such incidents will impact most west coast states, the interior of the peninsula, western Sabah, as well as western and middle Sarawak.”
It added that the predicted weather conditions have a potential to cause flash floods and structural damage to unstable construction.
MetMalaysia also advised the public to be more cautious during this period and to remain updated on weather forecasts and warnings issued by the department through its official website and social media platforms.
Updates can also be obtained from the department’s mobile app myCuaca, while members of the public can contact the department at its hotline (1-300-22-1638).
Meanwhile, a thunderstorm warning was issued by the department at 12.10pm today, with states affected including Perak, Selangor, Pahang, Kuala Lumpur and Negri Sembilan.

Just last night, Taman Bukit Permai 2 in Ampang suffered a landslide, leading to four fatalities and the evacuation of nearly 50 families in the area. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has declared the area a disaster zone.
